The Active Body Care Approach

Active Body Care believes it is essential that you have a full understanding of the cause of your symptoms to enable you to understand why the treatment will help and how you can avoid a re-occurrence.

As well as effective treatment Active Body Care aims to provide you with:

  • A fully explained diagnosis
  • An estimate of the number of treatments required
  • An individual treatment plan
  • Aftercare and preventative advice

Your first appointment

Your first appointment will take 30-45 minutes and includes your medical history, an assessment and treatment, aiming to reduce your symptoms and begin rehabilitation. Your history will include questions about your current symptoms, your general health and your everyday lifestyle.

During the consultation your body’s muscular and skeletal state will be assessed. You will be asked to perform a few simple movements to gain information on your body’s patterns of movement and function. Your muscle tissues will be examined, using a highly developed sense of touch called palpation, to help to identify areas of weakness or excessive strain throughout the body.

Once the root cause of your symptoms has been established and diagnosis explained, treatment can begin to unravel your unique sequence of events that have brought you to your current point. The treatment process uses soft tissue release, articulation and gentle mobilisation techniques to address poorly functioning areas in your body’s structure. Simple stretching or strengthening exercises may be suggested for you to do between appointments to support and reinforce the changes that have been made during your session.

You will be advised approximately how many appointments you should need. Each patient and their symptom picture is unique but, as a rough guideline, an average course of treatment takes 3 to 5 sessions.

You will be informed if, for any reason, Osteopathic treatment is not appropriate for you or if additional tests such as x-rays or blood tests are required before commencing treatment. Osteopaths are happy to work alongside your GP to achieve best possible care.

Moving forwards...

At your follow-up consultation you will be reassessed. The treatment plan will be continued and adapted as you progress and your muscles and joints respond. Many patients decide that they would like to have periodic preventative treatments to avoid recurring problems.

To help to achieve long term solutions, lifestyle and preventative advice will be provided where appropriate.
